In recent weeks, most children in the U.S. have been making their way back to school to begin classes again after the summer vacation. You might be sad (or a little relieved) to see your kids go back to the classroom, but you can’t deny how blessed we are as Americans to have this important access to an core education.
As a young child, I lived next to a high school, and there was never any doubt in my mind that I would attend it someday. That’s the case for virtually every child in America. However, for many other people around the world, access to an education is not a given. In places like Haiti, for example, parents barely have the ability to feed their children, much less pay for their education.
Let that sink in. Imagine having to choose between sending your beautiful, bright-eyed child to school or feeding him or her. The thought is frightening, but it is the kind of choice parents in Haiti have to make every day. That’s why here at Cross International, we have partnered with Divine Shelter Schools, a network of 18 primary schools serving some of the poorest places in Haiti, to provide scholarships for children who would otherwise not have access to education. Not only do the children receive an education, but they learn about the infinite love and saving power of Jesus Christ.
Katiana is a sixth grade student at one of the Divine Shelter Schools. Her favorite verse is 2 Corinthians 5:17. It says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old is gone, the new is here!” How powerful. If education has the ability to turn a life around, how much more does a Christian education?
The great news is that you, too, can get involved and help provide life-transforming education to a child just like yours. Click here to learn more about how you can contribute.
