Proverbs 22:6 offers this advice: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
This verse offers some Godly insight into just how impactful education can be in the life of a child. At Cross, we see that impact every day as we receive success stories from the education programs we support for poor children around the world.
Jessica Pilsquinga and her siblings are one example of just how life-changing a chance to go to school can be. Jessica, 12, and her sisters, Paola, 6, and Michele, 9, are able to attend school thanks to scholarships provided by Cross donors. They also receive after-school tutoring, food, and Bible classes at a Christian ministry we support in Quito, Ecuador.
Jessica and her sisters come from a family of 12 children and are the only ones who attend school. Last year, the girls were going to be pulled out of school because their impoverished parents could no longer afford it with their meager wages. That’s when Cross stepped in and provided the family with the funds to continue their education.
Without this support, the girls would likely have been married off at a young age, as is the custom for poor, uneducated girls in Ecuador. Instead they are receiving an education that will one day help them escape the poverty that dominates their family’s lives.
Cross supports dozens of education programs like this one with the help of generous Christians. Though these programs vary in location and the age of the children they serve, they all have one thing in common: a spiritual component. As these children learn skills that will help them have a better future, they also learn of Christ’s love for them, giving them hope despite the bleakest of circumstances.
