Housing is Health: Strengthening faith, families, and communities with healthy homes.

Between 1-1.5 million Guatemalan children and their family members live in homes made of dirt floors, cornstalks, mud, sticks, and other scavenged materials. These makeshift structures leave them vulnerable to violence, theft, and a wide range of health conditions, including diseases such as asthma, tuberculosis, influenza, anemia, and diarrhea, as well as decreased mental health.

In Guatemala’s remote mountain villages, families have no access to jobs, health care or education. When basic living conditions, food, and clean water are inaccessible to those in extreme poverty, owning a healthy home is impossible.

God is helping kids thrive through your generous giving. And He’s not finished yet.

Thanks to generous donors like you, Cross International is doing more than just replacing dirt floors. With help from our ministry partners in Latin America and around the world, we’re providing entire, safe and secure homes for marginalized families. For example, at Hope of Life in Guatemala, we’ve already built more than 20 concrete block homes, impacting over 200 people.

We pray that God will continue to bless Guatemalans with new homes through your generous giving. Each house Cross builds has:

  • a solid foundation
  • a waterproof roof
  • two bedrooms
  • a living room
  • a lockable door and windows
  • a toilet and washbasin

What’s under your feet matters.

Replacing a dirt floor with cement can be as good for a child’s health as nutritional supplements and as helpful for brain development as early childhood development programs (Center for Effective Global Action). Cement reduces the number of parasites on the floor and studies show it results in 13% less diarrhea, a 20% reduction in anemia, 30% higher scores in language and communication skills and 9% improvement in vocabulary in children under six. Not only are children better off on a strong foundation, but studies find that their mothers are less depressed, less stressed, and happier.

Will you prayerfully consider supporting Cross International’s Thriving Kids initiative? We not only build homes, but also help vulnerable children and families with support such as food, clean water, income generation, and experiencing the loving care of God, not just in Guatemala but in many countries around the world. When families, communities, and faith are strengthened…..children thrive. Please join us.
