Last week I was traveling throughout Haiti, visiting our Cross International mission partners in Gonaives—a large, coastal city in the north of the country with a history of voodoo, social unrest and oppressive poverty. I was particularly excited to catch up with Pastor Genada Juinato and his wife Rosa, who have been lovingly ministering to the poor there for 15 years at the Filipino Baptist Mission.
Pastor Genada has a special place in his heart for Haiti’s deaf children, many of whom are orphans or come from desperately impoverished families. These children are often denied the opportunity to attend school, are abused and mistreated, and are shoved to the outer fringes of society. That’s why he felt called to build a specialized school and boarding house so that he can give deaf students a quality Christian education and a safe place to live, all so that they may have the opportunity to become productive members of society.
Right now the current 40 students, ages four to 18, are meeting in four classrooms.
Cross International is building a second story for the school, so that more of Haiti’s deaf can benefit from an education and valuable vocational training. At the school students learn how to read, write and sign, as well as technical skills like carpentry, masonry, sewing, baking and construction. Their time in the classroom is also helping them develop their Christian faith and fellowship with one another.
“The Lord has blessed us through Cross to get a new school,” Pastor Genada said. “We’ve been praying for three years for this and Cross came through. God is faithful. Whenever we need something, he’s always provided.”
Thank you to our generous supporters who are making it possible for the least of these in Haiti to earn a life-transforming education!
