I just received this incredible story of restoration from Cross International’s ministry partner Kaibigan Ministry in the Philippines. Kaibigan means “friend” and that’s exactly what this holistic outreach is to the homeless street dwellers of metro-Manila. Just ask Joemar Fetiza:
Joemar was born and raised in a rural province of the Philippines and, like so many others, moved to the bustling city of Manila in search of greener pastures. He soon found employment with a construction company and persevered each day at his work. Unfortunately, a year later the company went bankrupt and Joemar suddenly found himself out of a job.
He found part-time jobs as a delivery boy and a factory worker, but his salary was simply not enough. He could not pay for rent or food, and he was soon swallowed up by the city’s high standard of living. As a result, Joemar made the sidewalk his home.
Joemar’s health and hygiene quickly deteriorated. Food was nearly impossible to come by, but thankfully he always had one reliable source: Kaibigan Ministry. To survive, he would line up to receive his only meal of the day. After recognizing his plight, a Kaibigan staff member encouraged him to come back to the outreach’s Kaibigan Center.
That was the beginning of a gradual change in Joemar’s life. At first, he found it difficult to abide by the center’s rule and regulations, but was eventually convicted by the Lord’s words that he learned in daily morning devotions and regular Bible studies. Kaibigan led him to a place where he gave his life to Christ. He also married, was given a new home through the housing project and has started a successful farm.
Thanks to Kaibigan Ministry, people like Joemar are experiencing physical and spiritual restoration—going from a life on the streets to a life built firmly on the rock of Christ!
