Reflecting on 10 Years of Serving the Poor

Cross International was founded in 2001 with a staff of three sharing one donated office space. Today the organization has more than 100 employees, and has served the poor in more than 30 countries through more than $1 billion in donations over the last decade. Looking back on our 10th anniversary, co-founder and President Jim Cavnar wondered…why have we enjoyed such success? Why have we been able to experience such growth?

Jim thought back to one of the first times he went to visit ministries in Haiti.  The drive took him through the remote northwest part of the country, where he came across about 40 people sitting under the shade of a tree. Some of them were holding open Bibles. Jim stopped to chat. He learned these villagers had to walk five miles to fetch water, ever since a drought scorched the area. This group had been coming together for four years to pray…and they’d been asking God to give them water.

Little did they know who Jim was, or how God was about to use their “chance” meeting in a wonderful way. In due time, Cross International helped them tap a mountain spring. At last their community had a ready supply of clean, fresh water—and so did five surrounding villages!

The more Jim thought back on the last 10 years, the more accounts like this came to mind. And so did the answer to the question why we have enjoyed so much success: Because people are praying for help. God answers their prayers and uses anyone willing to help, including Cross International.
