Cross International’s ministry partner Rainbow Network provides for the needs of the poor in Nicaragua through five areas of outreach: food, housing, health care, education and microenterprise. In all, about 42,000 people are helped by Rainbow Network’s programs – and many of these are children. In the rural area of Nagarote alone, more than 1,200 children benefit from the nutritious and protein-packed feeding program. Staff members also monitor the children’s weight and height to continually assess their health. If a child remains underweight despite the increase in food, a doctor is available to give them a medical exam and nutritional supplements when needed.
But Rainbow Network is not only interested in eliminating hunger today. They are also equipping families with the knowledge and resources they need to satisfy their stomachs tomorrow. Staff members bring awareness to poor communities, teaching them everything from hygiene to food preparation to gardening. The ministry even passes out seeds and helps families plant and care for their own fruits and vegetables.
The result? Children are healthier and the entire area has experienced a decrease in malnutrition. Praise the Lord for ministries like Rainbow Network, which are making a huge impact on the lives of the poor.
