When Jesus said we have to become like little children in order to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 8:3), he must have had in mind children like Monica.
Monica’s mental capacity never developed past age 3 and her growing body wouldn’t cooperate due to cerebral palsy. She lived near a garbage dump, where Monica spent her days scavenging for food. Her mom was such a severe alcoholic she would trade Monica to men for a bottle of booze.
Fortunately our ministry partner, Camp Hope, rescued Monica at age 15, and began to teach her the basics – how to wash, use the restroom, dress and eat properly. Now she can do all that plus make crafts such as vases and ornaments.
The folks at Camp Hope also taught Monica about Jesus, and she has truly taken him to heart. Not only does she listen with rapt attention during church services and Bible studies, she always volunteers to pray – and she always prays for “Mama.”
Well, the Lord heard her prayers. Monica’s mom recently cleaned up her life. She stopped drinking and comes to visit Monica every week!
What Monica lacks in physical and mental capacity she sure seems to make up for in faith, love and forgiveness – qualities Jesus wants us to emulate. Like little children…Like Monica.
