Kayaking to save orphans

What would drive a man to paddle 1,000 miles through icy waters over six weeks in a sea kayak all by himself? Well, for Mark Towery, it is his love of Christ and desire to help the poor.

If all goes according to plan, Mark Towery will paddle between 800 and 1,000 miles to circumnavigate Vancouver Island, which sits just off the coast of British Columbia, Canada and is about the size of Israel. He is making this trip to raise money for an orphanage we support in Malawi.

A few weeks ago, Mark began his attempt to circumnavigate Vancouver Island. He organized the trip to raise $26,400 to help us support the 135 children living in Kondanani Orphanage in Malawi. In Mark’s own words from his website: “We are partnering with Cross International to provide the Kondanani Orphanage with funds for infant formula, food, housing, medical, education and the love of Jesus Christ. This event has the potential of being a huge success and a much needed answer to the prayers of these children in Malawi.”

Mark’s powerful expression of love toward the poor has been a great source of joy for us in the office. And, as we found out a few days ago in an e-mail (below) from Kondanani’s Director Annie Chikhwaza, it has also encouraged those at the orphanage.

Dearest ones in Christ,

A few days ago I received a letter from Cross International telling us of Mark’s kayaking trip. I was utterly amazed and read it to the other six missionaries who have given their lives to serve the Lord here at Kondanani. We could hardly believe that one of our brothers would do this for our children and, we don’t even know who he is and yet we are joined together because we serve the same Father.

Mark, we want you to know that we at Kondanani love and appreciate you. We also stand in awe at the Father choosing you to meet our need. What a great God who speaks to the heart of His children. We are going to get the children to do some thank you cards and some drawings and scan them through to put on the website.

Once again, a big thank you. We also would like you to come and visit us at Kondanani. You will be very pleased to find that all your efforts are sown into good and fertile ground.

Love and blessings from all the Kondananians,

Annie Chikhwaza

Please join us in prayer for Mark as he completes the final half of his journey! (Click here to track his progress.)
