I love hearing stories of people who overcome insurmountable obstacles through God’s extravagant grace. We recently received a powerful testimony from a young woman at Arms of Love Safe Homes in Nicaragua, where Cross supports the education of orphans and vulnerable children:
My life before I came to Arms of Love was always miserable. My father was a soldier and a drunkard. He always battered my mother and abused me from the time I was 5 years old. My mother left us when she could no longer bear the abuse of my father.
My father didn’t care if we had food to eat or not. We roamed around our neighborhood begging for food, and if we couldn’t find any, resorted to stealing. We were even put in jail for a night for stealing, which was terrifying.
At the young age of 13, she became pregnant as the result of a rape. It seemed that, as hard as her life had already been, it was about to become even harder. How could a girl in such abusive circumstances bear the burden of raising a child? But then… she found help.
After I delivered my baby, I was brought to Arms of Love, and it was there that I personally came to understand the love of a family and also the love and acceptance that God has for me. I now have parents, brothers, and sisters. Arms of Love allowed me to finish high school and even sent me to college. I have just graduated with a degree in psychology and am now hoping to get a job as a counselor. I am also going to Bible college and will graduate in March 2012.
I am always amazed by God’s surprises, fulfilling His promise in Jeremiah 29:11, “to give me hope and a future” and “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). I thank God for the trials, because without them, my life would not have direction.
Thank you, Lord, for turning tragedy into triumph!
