A New Legacy of Hope

Dayana Louis Juste is 8 years old and in second grade at a Cross International-supported Divine Shelter School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Described by her teacher as sweet and smart, she is also a committed student, and is satisfied with nothing less than an “A” grade.

Though equally hardworking, without an education Dayana’s mother struggles to provide for her only daughter and is able to feed her little more than bananas and eggs at home. This is one of the reasons why she is thankful for Divine Shelter Schools: for giving her daughter balanced nutrition, and more importantly the education necessary for a brighter future. Without this blessing, Dayana would follow in her footsteps and never know anything other than struggle and difficulty.

For the Juste family, school represents a break in the cycle of generational poverty.

“School will help me have a better life,” Dayana said. “At school, I have learned that I want to help people. God helps us and my mother has done so much for me, so I want to become a doctor to help her and others.”
