Our Impact

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but we’ve given the next generation hope for a better future. Thousands of Haitian children received a Christian education and nutritious daily lunches at the Divine Shelter Schools. This network of 18 Christian schools, based in Port-au-Prince but extending to some very rural areas, opened the doors of learning to many children who might otherwise never go to school at all, by keeping tuition as low as a few dollars per month or, for the poorest families, waiving it entirely. Each Divine Shelter school is affiliated with a local Christian church and combines an academic curriculum with Bible classes, prayer and Scripture memorization.

By supporting Christ-centered education, we are raising up an empowered, God-honoring generation, equipping them to escape the cycle of poverty that has plagued their families for generations. These educated children and young adults can provide for themselves with dignity. The process begins with reading, writing and arithmetic — basic academic skills. Many poor children would never obtain an education without outside help, so we remain committed to promoting and funding Christian education on their behalf.

The support from our donors in 2015 funded scholarships, salaries and other critical components of our partners’ educational outreaches. One of those outreaches, the MEBSH Literacy Centers, is specifically geared toward the empowerment of Haitian restaveks (child domestic servants) and children at risk of becoming restaveks. We also helped the Divine Shelter Schools, an important network of Christian schools, give poor children access to education.
