Cross International distributing containers of food, supplies to Haiti earthquake victims
POMPANO BEACH, FL (Jan. 15, 2010) — Cross International is distributing millions of meals to victims of the devastating earthquake that demolished much of Port-au-Prince Tuesday. The meals are part of a 10-container shipment that the South-Florida-based Christian relief and development ministry has on the ground in Haiti today.
The shipments include, nutrient-packed Vitafood meals, shoes, medicines, and nutrition drinks. Cross has established a staging post on the ground and is now able to receive outside aid through the airport in Port-au-Prince.
Haiti Projects Officer Mike Henry, who was at Cross’ Haiti office at the time of the 7.2-scale quake, said the damage is overwhelming and help is urgently needed.
“I looked out the window of our office and saw a huge cloud of dust and smoke covering the city. I have never seen anything like it,” he said. “I went outside and most of the houses were collapsed. There were arms and legs hanging out of the rubble. There was screaming, yelling, and crying coming from every direction.”
Henry is working with Cross ministry partners in Haiti to assess the damage and determine how to best funnel the aid to those who need it most.
Cross President Jim Cavnar said that cash donations continue to be biggest need. These will allow Cross to wire much-needed funds to partners in Haiti for the purchase of food, clean water, and fuel for rescue efforts.
“As we continue our emergency response, we are also planning for the long-term needs of our partners,” Cavnar said. “A lot of rebuilding will need to take place once the dust settles. Cross International will be there to meet that need and help the vital ministries we support rebuild.”
Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti and join us in the relief efforts.
