A 220-foot ship designed to salvage sunken treasure will soon be saving lives, through a new partnership with Cross International. The Sea Hunter is expected to arrive Thursday in Miami from its Portland, Maine, base of operations, to be loaded with nine Cross-sponsored containers of emergency aid. Then the vessel will embark on a two-day journey toward Les Cayes, Haiti, to deliver the much-needed goods to earthquake refugees.

Here, Cross’ unique capabilities will come into play. We have developed a large network of in-country partners to help manage distribution, and they will play an important role in distributing the supplies to thousands of needy refugees.

The nine Cross containers are carrying more than $400,000 in donated food, medicine, tarps, wheel chairs, crutches, and other much-needed items. Cross is also providing funds to help cover the cost of fuel for the long journey.

The lack of a traditional seaport in Les Cayes would normally impede such a large shipment. However, the Sea Hunter is equipped with a heavy-duty, shipboard crane it will use to offload containers onto smaller boats that can dock at the Les Cayes wharf. The Sea Hunter also has the capability to convert saltwater to fresh drinking water, to be distributed to families in need. Water has been in short supply in refugee camps in outlying areas.

The ship’s owner, Greg Brooks of Sub Sea Research, was inspired to go to Haiti after reading about a Cross-supported orphanage in Les Cayes that is helping with relief efforts. When the shipments arrive, Cross will be working with the orphanage and other partners to provide aid to thousands of people in southern Haiti.
